A piece of intestine usually pokes through a tear in the intestinal lining. This means a small object pokes through a small tear, usually.

One idea is to put a large semisolid object at the bottom of the intestinal cavity, keeping the intestines away from the weaker area. The intestinal lining would have to experience a large tear to fail. Maybe the inserted object could make a tear impossible.

Another silly idea is to create a wheelchair exercise vehicle that would allow people with hernia problems to live in a relatively horizontal position. Seems unlikely.
