God protected the first murderer

Why would God kill Adam and Eve for eating a piece of fruit, but protect the first murderer, Cain? It seems backwards. It would make sense for God to protect Adam and Eve from the serpent, and kill Cain for murdering his brother. Also killing someone for eating fruit seems excessive.

No one in the Bible asked Jesus about any of this. They asked when Elijah was coming and when would Jesus take over as King.

And of course no whining session would be complete without asking, where is the flaming sword that turns every which way and the cherubims keeping us away from the tree of life? No one can see any of this.
