earth

The deepest part of the ocean is over 5 miles deep. Mount Everest is 28,000 feet. So from the lowest to the highest point on earth is a little over 10 miles. Sea level is about in the middle. Ok, why aren't we taught this stuff? Why is the surface of the earth so uniform? It seems like some parts should be hundreds of miles high or low. The oceans average over 12,000 feet deep, that's over 2 miles, average. That is a lot of water. If the surface of the earth was less even there might be much more land. Do we need more land? Couldn't we get by with half as much water? Actually, if the earth started off liquid why isn't it almost perfectly smooth?

The mountains skipped like rams

And the little hills like lambs.
