DON'T TOUCH.
This is so obvious it hurts. Melting butter out of the fridge on waffles has always been a challenge. The butter is too cold to melt on the waffles. The butter had to be heated somehow, and melting it to liquid worked best. This required an extra heat source and container.
Solution: when the waffle is cooked, open the waffle maker and put small chunks of butter on the waffle. Close the waffle maker for a few seconds. Open it and reposition any unmelted butter. Add some more if desired. Close again, then open, remove and add syrup. No additional mess to clean up.
