driving western highways in USA

Western highways outside of cities are generally not congested. The speed limit is usually 70-80 miles per hour. The are two major types of accidents, single vehicle and multi vehicle. The multi vehicle accidents are mostly avoidable by staying away from other vehicles. It sounds obvious, but since we all drive mostly in congested cities, we get used to driving close to other vehicles at highway speeds. On open highways this greatly increases the chance of a multi vehicle accident. The answer is to actively stay away from other cars and trucks. One simple tactic is to let other cars pass you quickly. Or if you are passing, speed up a little to pass them quicker. On rare occasions I will pull off and stop to get away from clingy drivers. Some city drivers feel compelled to drive close to other cars. Get away from them politely.
